From dab rigs and bongs to joints, pipes, and vape pens, there are numerous ways to consume flower, but rolling is a tried and true method that remains popular throughout the decades. In fact, a 2020 study found that one-third (34.1%) of all users smoke blunts with nearly two-thirds of African American smokers preferring blunts over other smoking methods. While joints are typically the most popular choice, blunts are chosen by many smokers since it holds a lot more material than a joint, burns slower, lasts longer, and also has a distinct flavor that’s preferred by many.
What is a blunt wrap?
If you haven’t heard your smoking buddies talk about blunts, you’ve probably at least heard a lyric or two by your favorite rap artists that mentions it. While a joint is a cigarette, a blunt refers to a cigar. The outside wrapper of the cigar is called a blunt wrap and is used to essentially hold the entire cigar together. The term blunt actually comes from the famous cigar brand, Phillies Blunt. Blunts are said to originate in New York, where people wanted to be discreet about smoking bud. They could smoke blunts freely on the street since it looked like they were simply puffing on a cigar.
Just like a normal cigar, a classic blunt wrap is made from tobacco leaves. Sometimes just one large leaf is used, but other times, multiple tobacco leaves are wrapped together to create the outer casing. There are two types of ways to roll a blunt. You can purchase a cigar or mini cigar and remove the tobacco inside so you have a blunt wrap to hold your dry herb, or you can purchase just a blunt wrap made specifically for smoking flower. The latter doesn’t require any cutting or removal of the tobacco filling and is ready to roll right out of the package.
Are blunt wraps legal?
Yes! Rolling papers and blunt wraps are legal across the United States. Even though these items are associated with partaking in bud, rolling papers and blunt wraps are still used by many people who roll their own cigarettes and cigars. It’s easy to find rolling papers, tobacco blunt wraps, and hemp blunt wraps for sale online, at smoke shop, at dispensaries, and at most large service stations. However, there has been recent talk of a nation-wide ban by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on the production of flavored cigars and menthol cigarettes, which has prompted many states to consider a ban or some sort of regulation regarding flavored tobacco products including flavored blunt wraps. Talks are on the table regarding the issue for many states with high bud use such as California, Colorado, and Oregon. Of course, the issue here is flavored tobacco products, so even if regulations do pass, the sale and use of natural hemp wraps and normal cigar wraps without flavoring will not be affected in any way.
Areblunt wraps the same as cigarettes?
Both blunt wraps and cigarettes are tobacco based, but they are not the same thing. Cigarettes consist of tobacco leaves that have been chopped and rolled using a thin rolling paper with a filter on one end. Blunt wraps are just a wrap. They are made from complete tobacco leaves that have been cured and are not filled with anything, so the user can create their own smokable. Whether you fill your blunt wrap with tobacco to create a homemade cigar, flower to create a blunt, or another herb, the option is up to the smoker. The main difference here is that a cigarette is wrapped with a rolling paper and filled with tobacco, where a blunt wrap is not.
Do blunt wraps have nicotine?
Since the cigar wrap is made from tobacco leaves, it does contain some nicotine. One study found that classic blunt wraps often have somewhere between 1.6 to 2.0 milligrams of nicotine. This number will depend on the quality of the cigar itself. In comparison, a cigarette has around 10 to 15 milligrams each. Even though blunt wraps have a lot less nicotine than a cigarette does, there are many users who prefer not to use tobacco products at all. Because of the high demand for nicotine-free blunt wraps, there are now many different kinds of cigar wraps on the market that aren’t made from tobacco leaves. Hemp blunt wraps are the most popular, but there are also other materials used such as herbal blunt wraps made from mint leaves or palm leaves. All of these alternatives provide a different smoking experience due to their distinct flavor profiles.
Types of blunt wraps
Blunt wraps are much more practical, offer lots of options, and provide a modern take on the traditional blunt. Instead of starting with the usual cigar or cigarillo that needs to be cut and emptied, a blunt wrap is already open, ready to be filled, sealed, and lit. This convenience makes them great for those who enjoy rolling blunts while on the go and want to avoid making a mess. There are several different types of blunt wraps available:
Classic tobacco blunt wrap - Many smokers who love blunts enjoy the unique flavor created by combining the cigarillo’s outer tobacco leaves with ground marijuana. There are several brands that preserve this classic combo by creating blunt paper made from tobacco leaves just like in a cigar, but without the filling. There are also tobacco flavored hemp blunt wraps that have a similar taste, but are actually tobacco and nicotine free.
Pre-rolled cones - Like pre-rolled joints, there are also pre-rolled blunt cones. The blunt paper is already formed into the shape of a cone so users just need to fill it up with ground dry herb and light up! Some brands include a pre-installed tip for stabilization and a wooden packing stick to achieve the perfect, smooth burning blunt. Pre-rolled cones aren’t just for those who don’t know how to roll well, they’re ultra convenient and are the quickest and easiest way to roll a blunt while out and about.
Flavored blunt wrap - Every blunt enthusiast has a go-to favorite cigarillo flavor that they know and love. Blunt wraps also come in a huge range of flavors when stoners are ready to spice up their smoking sessions. You can find all the classics like grape, Russian cream, watermelon, green apple, and banana cream in addition to some surprising flavors that pair amazingly with cannabis like mango, honey, guava, mint, tobacco, pear, and margarita. With so many flavored blunt wrap options, every smoke sesh can be an entirely new experience.
Hemp blunt wrap - One of the most popular tobacco-free options are hemp blunt wraps. The blunt paper is made from the dried leaves of legal hemp plants that do not contain psychoactive compounds like dry herb. The flavor is quite different and takes some getting used to if you’re accustomed to traditional blunts made from cigars. Hemp leaf wraps are a great option for those who don’t want to consume tobacco and allow the cannabis to show its full range of aroma and taste. Hemp blunt wraps come in flavored or unflavored varieties and several brands use leaves from organic, non-GMO hemp plants.
Other tobacco-free blunt wrap alternatives - While hemp leaf wraps are definitely the most popular tobacco-free option for blunt enthusiasts, there are several other natural materials used in wraps that are designed for smokers who want to steer clear of nicotine, tobacco, and additives. Two of the trendiest are mint leaf and palm leaf blunt wraps. Mintys Blunt Wraps are made with 100% organic natural mint leaves, which turns each exhale in a minty fresh explosion. The other is the King Palm super slow burning blunt wraps, which are free of additives, glue, and preservatives, and made by hand rolling palm leaves with a natural corn-husk tip. Keep in mind when making the switch that these do not taste the same as harsh tobacco based blunt wraps that most blunt lovers are used to.
Self rolling blunt wrap - The newest (and coolest) blunt wraps on the shelves are self rolling blunt wraps. Despite its name, these special wraps won’t roll up into a perfect blunt all by themselves, but they do make the process a lot easier if you’re a novice, trying to roll quickly, or away from home. Self rolling blunt wraps curl inward on both sides to form a nice shape that easily holds the ground flower and makes it simple to achieve a tightly rolled, slow burning blunt. Camo comes in a variety of flavors and is the most well-known brand of self rolling wraps right now.
How to roll a blunt
As mentioned earlier, there are two ways to roll a blunt and it depends on if you start with a hemp blunt wrap or if you’re using a cigar or cigarillo. It will probably take you a few tries to roll the perfect blunt, but be patient and once you get the hang of it, you’ll be able to roll a blunt in your sleep. We’ll break down the two methods so you can easily learn how to roll a blunt like a pro.
How to roll a blunt using a cigar?
You’ll need a few more pieces of equipment to roll a blunt using a cigar or cigarillo since it comes pre-filled. Your equipment list should include:
Herb grinder
Lighter
Pre-filled cigar or cigarillo
Rolling tray
Razor blade or knife
Dry herb
Optional: Tip
Rolling a blunt step-by-step
Grind up your dry herb - Using an herb grinder, get your dry herb ready to go by grinding it into a uniform size. Having an even size allows your blunt, joint, or bong to burn smoothly and you’ll end up with an overall better experience. If you can’t find your herb grinder, use your hands to break up the flower as evenly as possible. Be delicate when using your fingers so you don’t damage the potent trichomes too much. Set your ground herb aside for now.
Choose your cigar - Most avid blunt smokers have specific cigar brands they use consistently. All cigars and cigarillos have a slightly different flavor. If you don’t know much about blunts, try a few different brands before settling on the one you like best. You’ll want to keep in mind the size of your cigar and choose a smaller cigarillo if you’re planning a solo smoke session or a larger cigar if you’re going to share your bud cigar.
Break down the cigar - Now that you have your cigar chosen and the flower ready to go, it’s time to break down the cigar. Using a razor blade or sharp knife, carefully slice the cigar lengthwise. If you don’t have a razor blade handy, you can always use your fingers to very carefully split the cigar down the middle to access the inside. Blunt wraps are very easy to break, tear, and crack, especially if it’s dried out. Give this step your highest level of attention. If the blunt wrap tears too much, it can become unusable since your smoking material will fall right out. Once you have the cigar open down the middle, empty out the pre-filled tobacco or keep some of it if you want to mix it in.
Moisten the blunt wrap - Now you should be left with just the blunt wrap. Moisten the tobacco leaf wrapper either with a little water or by licking it. Whatever method you choose, be sure that you don’t get the blunt wrap too wet. We just want it to be wet enough to roll easily without breaking or cracking.
Add your weed and roll it up - If you have a rolling tray, now is the time to bring it out to catch any fallen herb. Using one finger to open the blunt wrap and your hand to hold it in place, pinch a bit of flower and place it inside the wrapper. If you’re using a tip, you can add that now. Be sure not to overfill your blunt or you won’t be able to seal the wrapper. The two sides of the opening need to meet and seal properly or you’ll have yourself a mess. Just like when rolling a joint with rolling paper, use your two hands to rock back and forth to even and tamp down the material within. Your blunt should be the same thickness throughout. Once you have the shape you like, pinch one side of the hemp blunt wrap down and roll the other side over the top of the flower to meet the other side of the blunt wrap. There should be no dry herb visible since it should all be encapsulated within the blunt wrap.
Seal the blunt - Seal the hemp blunt wrap by giving it a good lick. This will require more moistening than when sealing rolling paper. Lick the part of the wrap that is on top and the inside edge so it gets a little damp. Press down firmly so the two sides of the tobacco leaves stick to each other and the blunt gets sealed completely. Check to make sure there are no edges lifting up or areas along the length of the blunt that you missed.
Dry the seam - Using your lighter, run the seam of the blunt along the flame to quickly dry and seal up the seam. This last step will assure your blunt will burn better since nothing is moist and will also remain sealed during your entire smoke session.
Enjoy - That’s it! You’ve rolled your first blunt and it’s time to light it up.
How to roll a blunt using a blunt wrap?
Rolling a blunt using hemp blunt wraps is quicker and easier than starting off with a cigarillo since you don’t need to break it down. Blunt wraps are ready to roll out of the package! You’ll still need:
Herb grinder
Hemp wrap
Lighter
Rolling tray
Dry herb

Rolling a blunt using a blunt wrap step-by-step
Grind up your flower - The first step in smoking weed is always grinding up your flower. While it can be a nuisance, grinding is an essential step for a smoother and even burn. Use a quality herb grinder and be sure that you’re left with a uniform size.
Moisten the blunt wrap - With hemp blunt wraps, there’s no need to break it down since it’s not prefilled, but rather ready to use right out of the package. You may still want to moisten the hemp blunt wrap to be sure that it doesn’t crack or break when trying to roll it. Wet it just until it becomes moist either by licking it or with a little tap water.
Roll and seal the blunt - From here on out, the process is identical to rolling using a cigarillo. Open the hemp wrap using a finger and add a tip if you choose. Start filling up the hemp wrap with dry herb and leave some space to close up the blunt. Even out and tamp the blunt by rolling it back and forth between your fingers. Tuck one side of the hemp blunt wrap under the other and lick it to moisten. Press down hard to seal and continue to moisten if necessary. Give your blunt a once over to assure it’s fully sealed all the way along the length of the seam. Using the lighter, dry out the moisture along the seal by running the flame lengthwise down the blunt.
FAQ
Are hemp wraps healthier than other types?
Most smokers consider hemp leaf wraps to be a healthier choice compared to other types of blunt wraps, especially tobacco based cigars and cigarillos that contain harmful chemicals, additives, and nicotine. Most brands that manufacture hemp wraps take health and safety very seriously and provide an all natural product with a cleaner burn. Hemp blunt wraps are vegan, tobacco-free, and made from organically grown plants without any glues, additives, or preservatives, just dried hemp leaves. That’s it! Using leaves from the hemp plant truly unleashes the flavor profile of the legal dried herb for a wholesome cannabis experience that isn’t overpowered by the harsh flavor of tobacco. The smoke from a blunt made with a hemp leaf wrap still has a slightly earthy aroma and taste, but they burn a lot slower and smoother than tobacco leaves, making them a great option for smokers who want to switch to a healthier alternative.
Is the shipping and packaging discreet?
Despite changing views regarding cannabis and widespread legalization across the U.S., some cannabis connoisseurs may not want their parents, landlord, or roommates knowing what they like to do after work and in their spare time. Blunt wraps are much more discreet than a 24-inch huge bong, but we take precautions no matter what you order to ensure the shipping and packaging is discreet. Our fulfillment team in Dallas, Texas packages each order with care in a plain box or mailer that doesn’t draw attention and has no logos or mentions of 420. Not even the mail carrier will be able to guess what fun smoking accessories are inside! We also use a nondescript business name on the shipping label and your credit card statement just in case your parents get nosy about what you’re purchasing with your joint account. Even if your grandma ends up getting to the mail before you do, she’ll have no reason to get suspicious.
